Artist's Statement
In my work I aim to visualise the essence of an experience. I focus on my personal impressions and feelings towards moments in time, places, people, and dreams, infused with my experience of life. I try to let my work evolve as I create it. Listening to music shuts out the distracting outside world, relaxing my mind, and I allow the rhythm and sounds to flow through and become part of the substance of the piece.
I am particularly struck by wide open spaces, limitless skies, and especially the sea, where I feel exhilarated, overwhelmed by and at the mercy of nature. I aim to create the dizzying sense of space, height and power I am aware of when faced with these places. I am fascinated by the concept of the intense raw emotion of the comparatively insignificant human, existing and interacting with, the formidable forces of nature.
I wish to visualise a sense of the underlying energy of all things, and the world around us in perpetual motion. When I sit in any particular place, I feel bombarded with this 'orchestra of the universe', the sounds, rhythms, smells, and other subliminal sensations and how the variation and order of these elements, specific to each place, create a unique atmosphere.
I pay particular attention to variety of texture, sculptural qualities and mark making in order to translate the initial concept into visual form.
